"Hey Jude" by the thousands

5.29.2009

“One man may hit the mark, another blunder; but heed not these distinctions. Only from the alliance of the one, working with and through the other, are great things born.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupery

30 April 2009, Trafalgar Square:
Thousands upon thousands of people who gathered from all over came together to sing one of the most tear-jerking songs by The Beatles, "Hey Jude". It's actually quite beautiful to watch.

Hey jude, dont make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

Hey jude, dont be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.

And anytime you feel the pain, hey jude, refrain,
Dont carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.

Hey jude, dont let me down.
You have found her, now go and get her.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out and let it in, hey jude, begin,
Youre waiting for someone to perform with.
And dont you know that its just you, hey jude, youll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder.

Hey jude, dont make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then youll begin to make it
Better better better better better better, oh.

Na na na na na ,na na na, hey jude...

Closer to war? North Korea scraps 1953 armistice

5.27.2009

"The way to win an atomic war is to make sure it never starts." - Omar Bradley

So North Korea has been behaving very poorly as of late. The North Korean missile launches that have been angering the international community may be the next step toward a full-blown crisis.

For those who don't know, back in 1953 the Korean War ended with an armistice between the two parties, North Korea on one side, and South Korea, the United States, and UN forces on the other side.

Today, amid tensions and under pressure from both South Korea and the U.S., North Korea has decided it will no longer honor the treaty that ended the Korean War 56 years ago.

So does this look like it will be an international crisis? It could be. Underground North Korean nuclear tests have begun, and North Korea has withdrawn from all talks. So it seems as if the deteriorating health of Kim Jong Il is contributing to his irrational behavior.

So let's cross our fingers and hope for a peaceful end to this tension.
If not, Kim should remember the following: giving North Korea the benefit of the doubt, the US outnumbers North Korea's nuclear capacity 940 to 1. Hopefully that will be incentive enough to keep him quiet for a while.

Is Violence Inborn?

5.11.2009

"It is by no means self-evident that human beings are most real when most violently excited; violent physical passions do not in themselves differentiate men from each other, but rather tend to reduce them to the same state." - Thomas Elliot

So we all like to think of ourselves as decent people, right?

Ever ask yourself why you enjoy action movies so much?
Why are some of the most popular and highly rated video games violence related?
Why are some countries so rich with violence and others more peaceful? Is it that they learn this violence? Or is it that they already have it in them?

I read this article on the BBC website that really intrigued me. It answered some of my questions as to why I'm so attracted to violence but have no inclination toward being violent.

Up until an infant turns 3, they have no forms of restraint. Infants let loose their emotions until they learn to control them and learn that such actions are socially unacceptable. Ever heard of the period in a child's infancy called "Terrible Two"? According to Brain Explorer, the prefrontal lobe is responsible for controlling human behavior. Prior to learning what is "acceptable" behavior, human beings are born violent. Our experiences and teachings are what calm us down and keep the beast in its cage.

So is your newborn little "angel" less angelic than you thought? Not necessarily.

We learn socially acceptable behavior by being taught to share, not to harm others, and other things of the sort. However, it is even easier to "unlearn" this behavior. One simple traumatic experience, or a promise of freedom from consequences may cause a person to let go of their learned behavior and be violent.

It's gratifying to be violent. The human body releases a chemical called dopamine when we engage in these activities and it's a physically gratifying feeling. Along with the adrenaline rush, the human body can't help but love to be violent.

So when you ask yourself why your next door neighbor suddenly went bananas, think twice. Maybe he didn't go nuts. Maybe he was just doing what he was born to do, as disturbing as it may sound.

Will we result in our own destruction because of this?
That all depends on us and how we condition ourselves to resist these urges. That is, after all, what separates us from regular primates. The ability to resist our own nature.

The Flushing Pimp

5.08.2009

"Setting a good example for children takes all the fun out of middle age." - William Feather

Speak of setting a good example.

I come from Flushing, NY. Known home to the 2nd largest Asian population in the country (I think. I remember reading that somewhere but I forgot where), It's bustling with authentic Chinese and Korean restaurants, shops, banks, and more.

But there's more to Flushing than just the Asians. No town would be complete without the town crazies. Flushing is the proud home of crazies such as:
  • the Nickel Man
  • Crazy Joe (the Roosevelt Avenue crackhead)
  • Big Bird (the local ugly hooker)
  • the Crazy Parade Clown (complete with multicolored beard)
  • and who could forget.. The Main St. Pimp aka The Flushing Pimp

Normally seen around Downtown Flushing, the Main St. Pimp can be seen strutting his stuff walking with the flyest matching clothes and brandishing his pimp cane. He is, however, broke off his ass and homeless.

Rumor has it he died recently. I actually cannot confirm this but if you or someone you know can confirm it and has evidence of this, let me know. Leave a comment or email me. I'll post it up.

The story of the Main St. Pimp goes a lot deeper than just a crazy man who kicks game to young girls, waves his cane at onlookers, and demands discounts on clothes in women's clothing stores. His story is one of the American Dream.

How? Think about it. This is a man who is broke as all hell, yet still manages to dress fly and clean (though he smells rancid). Spotless clothes, fly shoes, pimp hats (or turbans sometimes), and no pimp is complete without his pimp cane.

No other town loco gets the publicity this guy does. He's so weird everyone actually loves him. What other crazy do you know that people love to take pictures with?

Flushing is proud to be your home, Main St. Pimp. Now take a shower.

Stay fly, Flushing Pimp. Stay Fly.
